I touched Elton John
My claim to fame, 15 minutes in the spotlight or just a fun fact about me. Years ago, back in 1975, when I was almost 17, I spent 10 days in Staten Island with a friend and her family. It was such an upscale education for a young girl from the Mid West. Daily we took the Staten Island Ferry into New York City and toured the city. One particular day, her parents took us to a tennis tournament and I touched Elton John.
The tennis tournament turned out to be the RFK Pro Celebrity Tennis Tournament which is held yearly in Queen, New York at the Forrest Hills Stadium. The year I attended was the fourth year of the tournament. For a young girl from a Newton, Iowa, that event was huge. We mingled in the celebrity section rubbing shoulders with the Kennedy Clan. Walking around we were within feet of Jackie Kennedy, Caroline and John Jr. Assorted other Kennedy family members were in attendance and also close by. I remember being in awe of really being in the same area as them and thinking that my friend’s parents must really be important people because who really hangs out with the Kennedys.
Howard Cosell was the commentator of the tennis matches. We saw Billie Jean King, Rosie Greer, Charloton Heston, and Walter Cronkite play tennis. Along with those celebrities Ethel Kennedy also played as did Senator Edward Kennedy and many others. Just hearing the famous names mentioned by Howard Cosell was very impressive. The players and he would trade jabs as the matches started. At the time I didn’t know exactly seeing who I was seeing. After all these years I still have the Program, which is about half an inch thick. The list was and still is quite impressive.
With the exception of learning the basics of tennis during my 8th grade PE class, I knew nothing of the sport. So ‘people watching’ was exciting to me because I had no idea what was going on. When Howard Cosell began talking about Elton John, I knew who he was. Next thing I knew he, Elton John, was being escorted across the patio area, where we were, to the outdoor court. They were walking my way and I stood there waiting for him to pass. Slowly I reached out my left hand and with my pointer finger I touched his right forearm. I touched Elton John.
After all these years, touching Elton John has been a little known fast about me, and my claim to fame. I have always loved his music and I have been a fan of his for years. Now, if one would even attempt to touch him what a scandal that would cause! Life was simpler back then. This young girl from the Mid West touched Elton John.
Until next time,
